How Can I Stay Spiritual Strong as a Freshman?

How can a Christian freshman at university remain spiritually strong amid all the new freedom they have?

Starting university brings a lot of change. You have more freedom, new friends, new responsibilities, and fewer people watching over you. For a Christian, this can be both exciting and challenging. How do you remain spiritually strong when everything around you is changing?

Isaiah 40:30–31 gives us an important answer: “Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength.

Isaiah reminds us that even the strongest young people eventually become tired and weary. Spiritual strength, therefore, does not come simply from being young, motivated, or determined. Our strength comes from the Lord.

So how do we receive that strength? First, make time for God in his Word and in prayer. University life can quickly become busy with lectures, assignments, friends, and activities. But if you want to remain spiritually strong, you need regular time with the Lord. Read Scripture. Think deeply about what you read. Pray. Ask God to help you understand his Word and live it out. As you commune with God, he strengthens you.

Second, surround yourself with faithful Christians. One of the biggest challenges you will face at university is the pressure to compromise. Your friends will influence your decisions, your priorities, and eventually your character. Don't underestimate the power of your community.

Seek out brothers and sisters who genuinely want to follow Christ. Encourage one another, pray together, study God's Word together, and hold one another accountable. Don't try to navigate university alone.

This is why being part of a faithful local church matters. Church gives you a community of believers with whom you can walk through the challenges of university. You will find fellow students facing similar struggles, as well as older believers who can offer wisdom from their own experience.

If you are a student at Gulu University, I would encourage you to consider joining University Community Church (UCC) and finding an accountability community where you can grow in your faith alongside other students and believers. You don't need to walk through university alone.

As a freshman, don't wait until you are spiritually weak before looking for Christian community. Build your spiritual life now. Spend time with the Lord. Stay rooted in his Word. Pray. Join a faithful church. Surround yourself with godly friends.

And remember: you don't have to be strong enough on your own. Wait upon the Lord, and he will renew your strength.
