Starting university is both exciting and challenging. As you step into this new season at Gulu University, you will be faced with fresh opportunities, responsibilities, and decisions that will shape your future. In the middle of the lectures, assignments, friendships, and activities, one thing will make a lasting difference — your relationship with God.

University Community Church Gulu (UCC Gulu) exists to serve everyone in the university community. We are not part of Gulu University and we have no formal working agreement with the institution — but we care deeply for students and staff. Our doors and hearts are open to anyone who wants to grow spiritually, find fellowship, and be equipped to live out their faith while excelling academically.
This guide is written to help you, as a new student, navigate your university years with a strong spiritual foundation.
1. Engage in a Faith Community
University can feel overwhelming, especially in the first semester. A healthy Christian community will help you find friends who encourage you, pray with you, and challenge you to keep your faith strong.
UCC Gulu hosts:
Sunday worship services where you can grow through Bible teaching and worship.
Weekly Bible studies on campus and in homes.
Prayer meetings where you can seek God together with others.
These gatherings are open to all students regardless of background. You’ll find a safe space to ask questions, explore your faith, and discover what it means to follow Jesus in a university setting.
2. Seek Spiritual Mentorship
One of the best ways to stay grounded is to walk with someone who has gone ahead of you. At UCC Gulu, pastors, mature believers, and senior students are available to mentor you.
A mentor can help you:
Balance studies and spiritual life.
Make godly decisions about relationships, finances, and personal conduct.
Develop consistent habits of prayer, Bible reading, and service.
Mentorship is not one-way — as you grow, you’ll also have opportunities to encourage and guide others.
3. Balance Academics and Faith
Your primary reason for being at Gulu University is to learn and graduate well. That means you should understand the grading system and work diligently to manage your GPA. At the same time, your faith is not a competing priority — it’s the foundation that will give you the integrity, discipline, and purpose to excel academically.
Use your time wisely:
Plan your week so that church and fellowship do not clash with your study timetable.
Ask God for wisdom and diligence in your coursework (James 1:5).
Remember that faithfulness in little things — like attending lectures, meeting deadlines, and doing honest work — is part of your worship to God (Colossians 3:23).
4. Integrate Faith into Everyday Life
Faith is not just for Sunday services. At Gulu University, you’ll meet people with different beliefs, values, and lifestyles. This is an opportunity to live out your faith in love, humility, and truth.
Some practical ways to integrate faith and learning:
Let biblical values guide your choices in friendships, dating, and academics.
Participate in community outreach and service projects through UCC Gulu.
Take time to reflect — keep a prayer journal or join a discussion group to process what God is teaching you.
5. Stay Connected Beyond Campus
Your faith journey will continue long after graduation. That’s why UCC Gulu connects students to the wider Gulu community through city-wide worship events, mission work, and partnerships with local ministries.
You’ll have opportunities to:
Serve in children’s, youth, and student ministries.
Join mission trips to share the gospel beyond the university.
Get involved in practical acts of love and service to the city.
This network of relationships will be a strong source of encouragement during university and beyond.
A Final Word to New Students
Faith growth at Gulu University is a journey marked by community, mentorship, integration, and outreach. University life will test you — but it will also shape you. You have the chance to let God grow your character, your faith, and your influence for His glory.
Whether through worship, study, service, or fellowship, UCC Gulu is here to walk with you. Our prayer is that during your years at Gulu University, you will not only earn a degree but also deepen your relationship with Jesus Christ — the One who gives life meaning and purpose.
"Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith…" — Colossians 2:6–7.
