Embracing Our Identity as Chosen Exiles

Updated: Aug 11, 2025

A few weeks ago, a young university student visited our church for the first time. After the service, she shared something quietly: "I love Jesus, but sometimes I feel so out of place. At school, with my friends, even sometimes with family, it feels like I just don’t fit in anymore."

Maybe you’ve felt that too. You love God, but the world around you pulls in a different direction. Your values feel strange to others. Your faith sets you apart.

The Bible has a word for that feeling: exile. In 1 Peter 1, the apostle Peter writes to believers scattered across distant places, calling them "elect exiles," chosen by God, yet strangers in the world they live in.

And that’s exactly who we are today. Deeply loved by God, yet walking through a world where we often feel out of place.

Peter’s message is clear and full of hope: You are chosen, but you are exiles. You are born into a living hope, but your faith will be tested. You are guarded by God, even as you go through struggles.

Understanding Our Exile

So, how do we live with joy, faith, and confidence as people who belong to God while walking through a world that doesn’t always understand us? Let’s look at five truths from 1 Peter 1:1-12.

Chosen and Called

Peter calls believers "elect exiles," people chosen by God, but also called to live differently from the world around them. Your salvation is not by chance. It is the work of God the Father who knew you, the Spirit who sanctifies you, and Jesus Christ who gave His life for you.

This identity changes everything. When you remember that you are God’s child first and foremost, it gives you the courage to live in a way that pleases Him, even when it doesn’t make you popular. So, when you feel out of place in this world, don’t be surprised. Let your heart rest in the truth that you belong to God above all else, and let that identity shape how you live every day.

Born Into a Living Hope

Peter reminds us that, through God’s great mercy, we have been given new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Unlike the things of this world that fade—money, success, comfort—this hope is anchored in something eternal. Our inheritance in Christ is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept safe in heaven for us.

This means we can live with confidence, knowing that our true treasure is not here but in the life to come. So rather than setting your heart on temporary things, set it on the living hope that will never fade. Let the reality of what’s waiting for you in Christ give you strength and peace today.

Finding Joy in Trials

Peter speaks honestly about trials. He says that even though we may suffer grief in all kinds of trials for a little while, these hardships have a purpose. They refine our faith, just as fire purifies gold.

When trials come, they are not meant to break you; they are meant to strengthen and prove your faith, making it genuine and beautiful in God’s sight. So, when struggles arise, don’t let them define who you are. Instead, see them as opportunities for God to refine and grow you, so that your life brings praise, glory, and honor when Jesus is revealed.

Trusting the Unseen Christ

Peter’s words are deeply comforting: "Though you have not seen Him, you love Him... you believe in Him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy." Even though we don’t see Jesus with our physical eyes, we can know Him, love Him, and trust Him deeply.

This is where real joy springs from—not from what’s visible, but from faith. As you walk through seasons where God feels distant or unseen, lean into trust. Let your faith deepen even in those unseen moments, and you will find a joy that is richer than anything the world can offer.

The Glory of Salvation

Finally, Peter points us to the wonder of our salvation. He reminds us that even the prophets longed to understand it, and the angels are amazed by it. The gospel we believe today is the fulfillment of God’s ancient promises, brought to us by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Your salvation is not ordinary; it’s a treasure of infinite worth. So, never take it for granted. Let the wonder of God’s grace fill you with fresh joy. Let it inspire you to live boldly for Him, knowing that you are part of something grand and eternal.

Living as Chosen Exiles

Embracing Our Identity

Like that young student, maybe you’ve felt out of place in your world. But take heart: you are exactly who God says you are—chosen, called, and deeply loved. Yes, you are an exile here, but you are a citizen of heaven. You have a living hope, a faith being refined, and a salvation that is more precious than gold.

So, walk tall today, child of God. Live with hope. Endure trials with joy. Trust in the unseen Christ. And never forget the glory of the salvation that is yours. You belong to God, even when you feel like you don’t belong anywhere else.

Conclusion

In the journey of faith, it is essential to remember that feeling out of place is a common experience. Many believers face the challenge of living in a world that often contradicts their values. However, this does not diminish their worth or identity. Instead, it can serve as a reminder of the greater calling they have received.

As you navigate your daily life, remember that your identity as a chosen exile is a source of strength. Embrace the hope that comes from your relationship with Christ. Allow it to guide your actions and decisions. In doing so, you will not only find peace but also inspire others around you to seek the same hope and belonging.
